Highways in Massachusetts with the most fatalities
Every year, Americans cover billions of combined miles on interstate highways, making accidents almost inevitable. However, many traffic collisions and fatalities can be prevented.
In 2020, motor vehicle accidents on U.S. roads resulted in nearly 39,000 deaths—a 7% increase from 2019, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2022.
NHTSA data indicates that in about 50% of all fatal accidents, drivers were speeding, under the influence of alcohol, not wearing a seatbelt, or a combination of these factors.
Highway driving often results in more severe or fatal accidents than other roads, as vehicles travel at much higher speeds.
President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocates tens of billions of dollars for programs aimed at enhancing road safety in the U.S., including physical infrastructure improvements, vehicle safety, and data collection initiatives.
Using data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System compiled by NHTSA, Stacker ranked the Massachusetts highways with the most fatalities in 2020. Ties were resolved based on the total number of accidents where possible.
